"My friends thought I was crazy to leave sunny San Diego but after working my way up the television ladder, here I am with a dream job at KFMB-TV!"

You can call it a homecoming of sorts for Jeff Zevely. Born and bred right here in San Diego, he was more than ready to join the News 8 team in February 2002.

"I was born at the Naval Hospital, went to San Dieguito High School, where my volleyball team won the CIF championship, spent summers on the beach…I’m just a typical San Diegan," says Jeff.

Far from “typical”, Jeff started his TV career in New Mexico. After graduating from UC Santa Barbara, where he played college volleyball for four years, he landed a job at KOAT’s station bureau in Farmington. There, Jeff honed his reporting skills. “I was basically a “one-man band,” he explains. “I had to shoot, write and edit stories all on my own…it was quite a challenge but I learned so much in that position.”

Moving up the news ladder, Jeff was promoted to KOAT’s main station in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he became a reporter. Just two years later, Jeff started delivering the top stories as KOAT’s weekend morning anchor.

Albuquerque was also where Jeff met his future wife and fellow News 8 reporter Heather Lucas.

“I love telling stories,” says Jeff. “In the TV news business I feel there’s a way to get the viewers the information they need but at the same time, make them feel something emotional about the people we’re reporting on.” It was this kind of dedication that lead Jeff back home to San Diego…and News 8.

Choosing "quirky" over "cliché" Jeff has surfed in his business suit, climbed stoplights, and jogged in minus ten degree meat lockers all to bring the viewer something unique and unusual.

Still living like a “typical” San Diegan, Jeff enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife, Heather and their daughter. Among his favorite activities are sailing, surfing, fishing, camping and of course, volleyball.
